Water under a hardwood floor, dried and rebuilt
The floor looked fine from above. The meter said otherwise. We took the wet and moldy floor out, dried what was underneath, and laid a new hardwood floor, inlay border included.

Containment, tear-out and mold
March 26, 2026
Plastic walls closed off the work area from the rest of the house. The wet hardwood and the subfloor under it came out, down to the slab. There was mold under the floor; it came out with the wet wood.

Drying
March 26–30, 2026
Air movers ran over the open floor, and we kept taking readings on the slab before anything was closed up.

Questions about this job
How did you know there was water under a floor that looked dry?
We read moisture under the floor before touching anything. The boards looked fine from above, but under them the meter went to the top of its scale. A reading tells you what the surface hides, so we take it before any tear-out decision.
Why did the subfloor come out too, not just the hardwood?
The water had gone through the hardwood into the subfloor under it, and there was mold under the floor. Both came out together, down to the slab, inside plastic walls that kept the work area closed off from the rest of the house. Then the slab was dried and measured before anything new went down.
Could the inlay border be put back after the tear-out?
Yes. The new hardwood went in with the inlay border laid again, so the finished floor has the same pattern the owner had before. The counter beside it got a new countertop and backsplash at the same time, with the cabinets wrapped while that work finished.
